The most common type of teleport functions as a telecommunications hub. It usually consists of a group of satellite antennas, access to regional and national fiberoptic networks, and interface facilities to other broadband communications systems such as microwave, cellular telephone, wireless local loops, cable television, PCS, and other wireless communication technologies.
Newer forms of teleports are "intelligent real estate developments (smart buildings)" and "intelligent cities." In these cases the term teleport is being applied to buildings and cities incorporating extensive telecommunications infrastructure as part of their utility system. These new teleports are capitalizing on the need to meet the information transfer demands of businesses and consumers around the world.
